After Hurricane Helene swept through Spruce Pine and Grassy Creek, NC, residents faced a major cleanup task. With fallen trees and debris spread across the area, the community and volunteers rallied together to tackle the damage. This required skilled hands and sharp tools, and it wasn’t an easy job.
A unique "event" emerged from this aftermath: the Chainsaw Sharpen Challenge. Four dedicated individuals from the Franklin, TN CFJ Chapter took on the incredible feat of sharpening over 100 chainsaws in six hours. Yes, you read that correctly—100 chainsaws!
The Importance of Chain Maintenance
Chainsaws are amazing tools for quickly cutting through wood, but their effectiveness lies in proper maintenance. It's essential to keep each chain sharp and functional, especially after widespread storm damage. The Chainsaw Challenge provided a prime opportunity for our team to get a lot of chains resharpened in a short amount of time to help conquer the long road ahead.
When chainsaws are properly sharpened, they allow for quicker, safer cleanup. For instance, a sharpened chainsaw can cut through wood up to 40% faster than a dull one, making a significant difference when time is of the essence. Our team not only sharpened the community's chainsaws for their upcoming work, but also did small engine tweaks/repairs and shared the love of Jesus.
Breaking Down the Challenge
With time ticking away and the sun beginning to make its descent for the day, the challenge was as much about speed as it was about precision. The team first set up shop at Spruce Pine Baptist Church before needing to relocate to Grassy Creek Presbyterian Church after a tree fell in the parking lot severely injuring a young mom. Word of month started to spread once we arrived at both locations. The need for sharpening was abundantly needed.
Chainsaws of different makes and models arrived, each needing attention. The process involved sharpening the chains and inspecting each unit for issues like fuel leaks, dull blades, spark plug replacements, filter cleaning, etc... Every minute counted, and the team worked steadily, showcasing both determination and efficiency.
On average, if they managed to service a chainsaw every seven minutes, completing over 100 chainsaws would require around 700 minutes of focused work, which is over 11 hours. As you can see in the math, having more than one person is critical in order to keep things from getting too backed up.
The Call to Action: Are You Up for the Challenge?
The Chainsaw Challenge in Spruce Pine, NC and Grassy Creek, NC was about more than just sharpening saws; it was about being the hands and feet of Jesus for these very distraught communities.
