Unveiling Chainsaws for Jesus: The Untold Story of Sharpening Chainsaws and Spreading Hope in Amory, Mississippi

Updated: Jan 22

In the wake of the EF-3 tornado that struck Amory, Mississippi on March 24, 2023, the community faced a daunting challenge. Amidst the rubble and loss, local residents searched for hope and resources to rebuild their lives. One creative response emerged from Jon Christensen—a vision born from a night of reflection aimed at equipping those affected with sharp chains for their chainsaw's. Thus, the initiative "Chainsaws for Jesus" was launched, driven by a mission of aid and community support.

The Inspiration Behind the Initiative

Jon Christensen's journey began with a straightforward yet impactful concept: assist communities in their recovery by sharpening chainsaws and performing minor repairs. Many Amory residents were in need of fully functioning chainsaws to clear debris from their properties or to lend a hand to their neighbors. Jon recognized that by setting up in the heart of the disaster response area, he could activate a network of love by being the hands and feet of Jesus through both sharpening chainsaws and sharing Jesus.

When Jon arrived in Amory, he came with a small set-up: a table, a generator, an extension cord, and chainsaw sharpeners ready for action. The local sheriff generously offered him a spot in a high-traffic area—right in the middle of the Amory command post. This location ensured maximum visibility which was enhanced when the sheriff made an announced thru their secure radio network that someone is here to sharpen chainsaws for free. Here they came...

The Launch of Free Chainsaw Sharpening

As news of the "Free Chainsaw Sharpening" service spread, residents and other service volunteers began to arrive with their chainsaws and stories of resilience. Jon’s simple yet effective advertising using a piece of poster board captured the attention of many. Over the course of a single day, he sharpened nearly 30 chainsaws, effectively breathing new life into the chainsaws which were essential for the recovery process.

The community members and volunteers came together not just to get their chainsaws sharpened and perhaps tweaked a bit but also to share their stories and support one another. This was a powerful display of unity and resilience. For many, it wasn’t just about having a sharpened chainsaw; it was about helping to restore hope and reignite the bonds that connect neighbors and new friends, especially in tough times.

A Testament of Community Resilience

Chainsaws for Jesus illustrates how innovative solutions can arise from crises, highlighting the powerful impact of community support, volunteerism and resilience. Jon Christensen's steadfast commitment to helping others serves as a reminder of what we can accomplish when we unite.

In the aftermath of natural disasters, initiatives like Chainsaws for Jesus not only sharpens chains but also helps sharpen what matters most, the love of Jesus. This narrative transcends chainsaws; it embodies faith, community spirit, and an unyielding dedication to giving. Come join Jon and the team at Chainsaws For Jesus in assisting at future natural disaster.
